Both of them deserves that you take them separately to either a puppy or some other sort of obedience class. Reading advices in books and on the internet, can never replace the help you can get from a trainer that can see you and your dogs in real life, the socialization the dogs get from such training is also difficult to otherwise get, e.g. also the trainer usually recommends good training books.

Some book suggestions :

http://www.amazon.com/When-Pigs-Fly-Training-Impossible/dp/1929242441/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275769472&sr=1-1 (When Pigs Fly! Training Success with Impossible Dogs).

http://www.amazon.com/Teaching-Basic-Obedience-Train-Owner/dp/0793805910/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275770275&sr=1-2 (Teaching Basic Obedience: Train the Owner, Train the Dog).

http://www.amazon.com/Power-Positive-Dog-Training/dp/0470241845/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275770740&sr=1-1 (The Power of Positive Dog Training).

http://www.infibeam.com/Books/info/anders-hallgren/mental-activation-ways-stimulate-your-dog-s-brain/9783861279273.html (Mental Activation: Ways to Stimulate Your Dog's Brain and Avoid Boredom, the same book but from Amazon.com, http://www.amazon.com/Mental-Activation-Stimulate-Brain-Boredom/dp/3861279274/ref=pd_sim_b_1 ).

http://www.amazon.com/Talking-Terms-Dogs-Calming-Signals/dp/1929242360/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276962001&sr=1-1 (On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals).

http://www.amazon.com/My-Dog-Pulls-What-Do/dp/1929242239/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276962001&sr=1-3 (My Dog Pulls. What Do I Do?).

About the name, I often try to chose names where I feel that their meaning suits the dog.

Mindy can either mean bee, honey or black, dark.

Since Tina can be short for Albertina, Bettina, Christina, Martina etc., it depends on their meaning, so it can i.e. mean bright (Albertina), christian (Christina), warlike (Martina) and so on.

Wendy means white, fair, blessed.

So, for me, it would depend on how she looks and her personality.

100% DITTO to Bells!

I have an entire library of dog training books, and couldn't select a favorite. Some I get great training tips from...some make me CRINGE. Some are vintage older books, but fun to compare how training practices have morphed around over the years. What works for one dog will not work for another.

You have TWO HUGE pups that need a foundation of manners pronto. Hook up with a good basic training class and do ALL of you a favor! You have to get to know your dogs, and your skill level as a handler will only IMPROVE if you get into classes with a knowledgeable behaviorist / trainer. .

Good luck! You certainly have your hands full with TWO Dane pups!

Firstly, I like Mindy. Personally because I remember a black lab my grandmother owned when I was very young who also had the name Mindy. And she was beautiful!!

I don't have any reccomendations of dog books, but we have a mutt (either Staffy or Pittbull X Rhodesian Ridgeback) named Sylah. She is about 7 months old now, and she seems to have been mistreated in her younger days, back before we got her.
She's pretty misbehaved, but gets nervous and scared when she's done something wrong. She'll run into the bathroom, tail between her legs, cower in a corner and shake til she falls over. It's cute, but very sad.
So the way we teach her is this:
If she pees on the floor, and we catch her, we say "Sylah! Oi! No!" and she'll know shes done something wrong. Then before she gets the chance to run, we hold her and put her nose beside the pee and say "What have you done?" then after about 3 seconds we let her go outside and the person who told her off doesn't pay attention to her for half an hour.

Find your own methods depending on the dog.
I know ours may sound sort of cruel, but she's learning very fast. And once that half an hour is up, everyone (including the person who told her off) gives her lots of pats and attention.
Shes a well loved dog, don't get me wrong xD
Just naughty.

It's easy to train a dog without a book. You just need to be able to get the message across in a civilised manner.

Eg: Teach to speak. (Only after you teach dog to sit)
This trick can have many phrases, all resulting in the dog barking.
Ask, Speak, Talk, Beg etc etc.
Simply get a dog treat from the cupboard, tell your dog to sit.
Hold the treat high where the dog can see it but cannot reach it, even if they were to jump.
Say the command you wish the dog to relate barking to. We'll use Ask in this case.
Hold the treat, then say "Ask."
Your dog may jump to reach the treat. If it does, just simply make it sit.
Say "Ask" and make a barking noise. "Woof!"
After a few tries, your dog will get the message.
Once the dog makes some form of noise, even a small growl or a tiny yip, reward him or her with said treat.
Good luck!

Any book by Patricia McConnell. Also check with your local shelter and see if they will let you bring your rescue dogs to a training class for free or at a reduced price.

Why do you need other people's approval what you call your dog?
I am not being rude here..but naming a dog is personal. Pick a name/names and nicknames
that YOU like and are comfortable with.

I would never ask anyone to name my dogs for me. I study the dog/puppy, observe it's
personality over weeks and eventually a name will come to me.

Best to sign up for some classes, and get hands-on training with a professional trainer. Call you local kennel club, and they can refer you to some classes in your area.

As far as names, you are the one who has to live with the dog's names, not us.

Look into the Barbara Woodhouse book, No Bad Dogs - she's one of the best. She also did a tv series for the BBC. She takes quite a firm hand but trust me she gets exceptional results - and you may need a firm hand with your large dogs
